Learning Journey to National Orchid Garden

It was near recess time by the time we reach the garden. So the first activity was " Eat, Eat, Eat!"

The beautiful orchids .....

O 16 April, our class went on a National Education learning journey to the National Orchid Garden.As on all learning journey, the children were excited to go on an outing. For many of them, it was their first visit to the garden. Thank God, we were blessed with wonderful weather that day.

During the trip, the children were able to admire and enjoy the diversity, richness and beauty of one of the largest display of orchids in the world.

Our first stop was the VIP Orcid Garden. The children learnt that the collection of orchids featured here were orchid hybrid named after visiting state dignitaries and VIPs. We caught a glimpse of orchids named after Magaret Thatcher, Princess Masako and many more. We also learned that it is important for Singapore to have close ties with friends from other countries.

Next, we saw our National Flower of Singpore, VANDA Miss JOAQUIM. We then visited the Tan Hoon Siang Mist House. The Mist House was set against a backdrop of tropical foliage and cultural background. We enjoyed a host of rare orchids here.

We then went into the COOL House which encloses a montane tropical forest. The cool air, drifting mist and rushing torrent provide a highly realistic representation of high elevation sites in the tropics for the children.

It was an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Tock Tock Chang - The Chinese Opera Game

We are reading a New Big Book - The Chinese Opera Game. This book is about a group of children who dressed up as soldiers and warlords using towels. They took broomsticks and pretended that they were swords.

It was an interesting book for the children to do a role play.

The students brought their towels and wore them as cloaks. The boys were excited to bring their toy swords. I brought some metal bowls and plates from home for the soldiers to make some "music".

We had a fun time acting out the story. Parents, do talk to your child about the book and what they have learned about Chinese Opera.

Measuring Activity

After learning about measuring in metres, the children moved on to learn about measuring in centimetres. For this activity, the children work in pairs to measure their partners' heads, wrist and waist.

Then they compare their own body parts' measurements  with their friend's.

It is important to teach them that when measuring, they should always start at "0" to get an accurate measurement.

Some children were using the tape measure for the first time and were having difficulty learning to use them. Parents may want to buy a tape measure or get a paper tape measure from IKEA.Do encourage your child to practice their measuring skills. They will be tested on their ability to mesure accurately in this term's performance task.
